Bike Parts (and Tools) That Do Double Duty

Let’s say you are a unicyclist. Let’s also say you are a bicyclist. You likely have a fairly consistent need for both bike parts and tools that are necessary to make repairs, replacements, basic adjustments, or just tighten fasteners and fittings. 

Fortunately, some unicycle and bike parts are interchangeable, as are many unicycle and bike tools. This short post can be your guide. 

Bike Parts

Some unicycle parts are made by bike parts manufacturers. Therefore many parts are interchangeable, among which are the following. 

• Pedals don’t know or care whether they are installed on a bike or unicycle so long as they are compatible with the crank arms you are trying to mount them to. 
• Like the pedals, the rims don’t know or care whether the wheel they constitute is part of a bike or unicycle. 
• The same thing goes for spokes. They must be compatible based on the size of the wheel, but whether there’s one wheel or two on the ride, it hardly matters to the spokes themselves. 
• Tires are tires. If they’re the right size for the rim, that’s what matters. They can be used on a unicycle or a bike. 

These are just some of the bike parts that are also compatible with unicycles, but it paints a good picture of where you can start if you need new parts. 

Bike Tools

Just as some bike parts are interchangeable with unicycles, some bike tools are also cross-compatible as unicycle tools. Here are just a few of them. 

• Tire pump. A tire pump is used to maintain tire pressure, but it hardly knows or cares whether it’s for a bike or a unicycle. Honestly, you could use a tire pump to inflate a football, too.
• Tire lever. Tire levers are used to provide a mechanical advantage when installing tires or taking them off. They’re useful as both unicycle and bike tools.
• What matters is that you have the right set and size of wrenches, but they’re indispensable as both unicycle and bike tools. They have other applications, too, unsurprisingly. 
• Chain breaker. Most unicycles don’t have chain drives, but some, like giraffe unicycles, do. As a result, some unicycle tools also have chain breakers, which as it just so happens can be surprisingly useful as a bike tool as well, since most bikes have chain drives and a chain breaker is an indispensable bike tool.
