I built a phone number validator in 25 lines of Python using a free phone lookup API

    I've been tinkering with phone number validation for a side project and wanted to share something useful for anyone who's ever needed to check whether a phone number is real before trusting it. A few weekends ago I needed a phone lookup API for a small signup form — I was tired of fake numbers slipping through and wanted to verify country and carrier automatically. Turns out you can do it in about 25 lines of Python, no fancy libraries needed.

    WHAT IT DOES

    - Validates any phone number worldwide
    - Returns line type (mobile / landline / toll-free / VOIP)
    - Shows carrier, country, region, and location
    - Converts numbers into local and international formats

    Here's the core of the script:

    import requests

    params = {
        'access_key': 'YOUR_API_KEY',
        'number': '14158586273'
    }

    data = requests.get('http://apilayer.net/api/validate', params).json()

    if data['valid']:
        print(f"Number: {data['international_format']}")
        print(f"Country: {data['country_name']} ({data['country_code']})")
        print(f"Carrier: {data['carrier']}")
        print(f"Line type: {data['line_type']}")
    else:
        print("Invalid number - don't trust it.")

    Swap in your own API key and you're done. You can also validate numbers in bulk by looping through a list, or lock validation to a specific country by adding country_code to the request.

    A FEW THINGS I LEARNED WHILE BUILDING IT

    - Always strip spaces, dashes, and parentheses before sending the number — formatting garbage causes false invalids
    - Check the 'valid' field first; everything else only matters if that's true
    - Line type is underrated — knowing mobile vs landline changes how you reach people (SMS vs call)
    - Carrier data is handy for telecom dashboards and lead quality checks
    - The free tier (100 requests/month, no credit card) was plenty to build and test everything

    IDEAS IF YOU WANT TO EXTEND IT

    - Add real-time validation to a signup or checkout form
    - Clean a messy contact list before an email or SMS campaign
    - Flag suspicious signups where the number's country doesn't match the user's IP
    - Build a small dashboard showing the carrier breakdown of your user base
    - Pair it with an IP geolocation API for a lightweight fraud-check workflow

    One last tip: run a few known-bad numbers through first — wrong digit counts, random country codes, obvious fakes. Seeing the response for invalid input teaches you more than the documentation does, and it shows you exactly which fields to trust in your own app logic.

    Since I'm on the team, feel free to hit me with the tough questions too — rate limits, coverage, accuracy, whatever you're curious about. And if you build something cool with it, I'd genuinely love to see it. Happy to help debug integrations right here in the thread.

    So — what would you use a phone lookup API for in your own projects?
