Just got a notice from the Orange County DA's Office - Harbor Justice Center. Has anyone dealt with this?

I came home today to find a legal notice from the Orange County District Attorney's Office at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach. To be honest, my heart sank when I saw it. It looks like a creditor is taking legal action against me over an old debt, and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed.

I've never been through anything like this before. The paperwork mentions a summons and complaint, and it says I need to respond within a certain time frame. I know ignoring it could lead to things like wage garnishment or a bank levy, but I'm not even sure the debt is valid or if the collector has the right to sue me.

What I'm really hoping to learn from anyone with experience:

    • Has anyone else received notices from this specific courthouse for debt collection?

    • What happens if I file a response disputing the debt? Is that a difficult process?

    • Should I try to negotiate a settlement on my own, or is it smarter to get legal help?

    • What are the red flags I should look out for with these types of notices?

I'm just trying to figure out my options and not make any mistakes that could make things worse. Any guidance or stories from people who've been through this would mean a lot.

    Thanks for reading.
