Camo Cargo Shorts: What (and What Not) to Do

Camouflage is a wonderfully versatile pattern (well, it’s actually more than one) that can be used effectively for concealment in the field while hunting, playing airsoft, reenacting, or engaged in MilSim, just as easily as it can be used more domestically for fashion purposes.

And, in fact, when it is used for such, the micros and macros that constitute the overall pattern actually tend to add color and intrigue rather than to conceal. However, just as camo - such as camo cargo shorts - can be used in fashion, there are some “rules” you should understand first.

Let this short (no pun intended) post be your primer.

What Not to Do

First, let’s talk about some ways in which you should not style with camo cargo shorts:

  • Don’t wear too much camo with your camo cargo shorts. Overdoing it will look ridiculous. You can get away with some accents or supporting accessories (such as a camo hat) but wearing a camo short over camo cargo shorts is overdoing it and will look ridiculous unless you are trying to stay hidden.

  • Mind the pattern; some patterns, like Kryptek, are really more effective for use in the field than they are for fashion.

  • Bright colors are alright and create contrast, but don’t wear brands or logos that are overly involved as the extra movement will create discord when paired with camo.

Those are the big rules about what it’s best not to do with camo cargo shorts, so let’s talk about what you can do.

So What Are the Best Ways to Style with Camo Cargo Shorts?

  • Keep it casual. Camo cargo shorts (and camouflage in general) do not work well with formal clothing. Avoid blazers, suit components, and other similar clothing.

  • Wear camo cargo shorts with a plain white or black t-shirt. It’s understated and simple and works well.

  • If you don’t opt for a plain t-shirt, consider one with a brand or graphic, but again, make sure to keep it understated. Brands or logos that are too involved will clash with camouflage.

  • Consider a camo accent without overdoing it; camo hunting or logger boots, or a camo cap may work well with the cargo shorts.

  • For an edgy look, consider a leather or denim jacket over your t-shirt.

  • While hunting boots, work boots and logger boots generally look good with camo cargo shorts, you can also pair them with sneakers for a clean, urban look.

  • One last general observation is to create a sense of continuity and compatibility with the camouflage. Therefore, if you wear another piece or some accessory with camouflage, make it the same pattern as your camo cargo shorts.
